Biography

Hilary has represented claimants in maximum severity, PI claims for over 20 years. In 1987 she brought the first claim against the Ministry Of Defense and has since represented 1000's of members of the Armed Forces and their families and continues to campaign on their behalf.

She is secretary of the Royal British Legion Group and member of the Parliamentary Gulf War Group; she regularly provides evidence for the House of Commons Select Defense Committee and has covered conflicts from Northern Ireland to Bosnia, Gulf War 1, Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2008 Hilary Meredith was awarded Senior Fellowship status of APIL, having served on the executive committee from 1998 – 2007, as well as winning Crain's Business Woman of the Year 2008 and the Personal Injury Awards ‘Personal Injury Lawyer of the Year (claimant) 2008'. Hilary was also a finalist in the 2008 Inspirational Women's Business award and the Insurance Times, Law Firm of the Year in 2007.

Nicholas Bevan- Enable Law

Biography

Nicholas is a founding director of Enable Law Ltd. He is a highly experienced insurance and personal injury solicitor. He is a Fellow of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers. He was recently senior counsel at Bond Pearce LLP where he advised both the Insurance and Personal Injury Departments and was responsible for training. He writes regularly for the New Law Journal, the Journal of Personal Injury Law and the Legal and Medical Journal. He is the author of Future Loss in Practice and of Division VIII of Butterworths Personal Injury Litigation Service. He is a member the editorial board of three different legal publishers. Nicholas is a well recognised legal commentator, lecturer, trainer and presenter and winner of the Personal Injury Awards 2008‘Outstanding Achievement Award’.

Prof. Robert Douglas

Biography

Robert Douglas' academic and research career developed at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London University in occupational and environmental medicine where evidence based medicine has always been the touchstone.
His research into environmental hazards started with basic research into the respiratory and ocular effects of irritant gases and vapours in human volunteers as well as developing techniques for respiratory assessment in asbestos lung disease. He then carried out large epidemiological studies for the Home Office into the effects of smoke inhalation in firefighters and followed this with studies of stress at work. He is a past Regional Dean of the Royal Society of Medicine and the President of The Harveian Society of London 2006. He is active in a number of societies and as a university external assessor of examinations. He now writes medico-legal reports for the Court and Tribunals in a wide range of personal injury cases relating to environmental exposures both occupationally and in the community.

Andrew Twambley - Injury Lawyers4u

Biography

Andrew is a claimant personal injury lawyer. He was responsible for bringing such leading cases as Callery v Gray, Sarwar v Alam and lead the successful fight to rid the industry of "costs muppets". At the height of the so called "costs war" he would say anything to anyone to gain a headline, but age has now persuaded him to be a little more conservative and a little less adversarial... occasionally. In 2005 he starred in BBC TV series "No Win No Fee". Andrew has semi retired from the headlines and spends his time looking after Amelans and running Injurylawyers4U.

Anthony Hughes - Horwich Farrelly Solicitors

Biography

Anthony graduated from Sheffield University with an LLB (Hons) and has worked with a number of leading Manchester law firms, becoming a partner in 1995 and a Managing Partner in 2001. He has specialised in high value insurance matters arising from road traffic accidents, accidents at work and health and safety issues. He also has expertise in fatal accidents including a criminal element in terms of dangerous driving and death by dangerous driving. Anthony is an active member of the local business community and in 2004 was invited to join the Board of Preston North End Football Club where he continues as a non-executive director. Anthony is a member of the Executive Committee of leading lobby organisation the Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL). Anthony joined Horwich Farrelly as Chief Executive in May 2009.

Denise Kitchener - APIL

Biography

Denise has been chief executive of APIL since October 1992. At that time, Denise became the first full time staff appointment for the association, coming in as Executive Director. APIL’s office, based in Nottingham, is the working base for 28 full time staff.

In her life ‘before APIL’, Denise worked at Nottingham Trent Polytechnic (now University) as head of their commercial centre, working with all academic departments to generate additional income via training, consultancy, projects, research and publications. Denise has also worked for two other membership organisations – The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

In APIL, Denise has led the development of three active operational sections – membership and training services, legal affairs, and press and parliamentary lobbying. Denise currently chairs APIL’s training and accreditation committee and sits on the editorial board for JPIL (Journal of Personal Injury Law).

Michael Redfern QC

Biography

TYPE OF PRACTICE Michael specialises in the field of Clinical Negligence, Brain, Spinal and Catastrophic Injury. Also Employers Liability and cases with a medical component.

In December 1999 Mr Redfern was appointed Chairman of the Royal Liverpool Children's Inquiry (Alder Hey Hospital). Following appointment by the Government, Michael is currently Chairing the Redfern Inquiry into human tissue analysis in UK nuclear facilities. He is a recorder and former Leader of the Northern Circuit. He is also a bencher of Inner Temple.

Alan Nesbit - ARC

Biography

Alan Nesbit set up Nesbit & Co Solicitors in Bury in May 2003. He has worked in the industry since 1996 and qualified as a Solicitor in 1999,and is an APIL Accredited Lawyer at Senior Litigator Level. He has worked on both the Claimant and Defendant Insurance side with various practices both large and small. He now spends his time concentrating on managing and driving forward the practice, now named Nesbit Law Group LLP, which has since opened offices in London, Luton and Leeds as well as Bury, and focuses on developing the sources of work at a corporate level. He has separate specialisations in Compliance and Hire, and earlier in his career, he was heavily involved in dealing with credit hire, both on the Claimant and Defendant side, where he assisted Credit Hire Companies with joining the ABI GTA when it first started and has continued to monitor developments in the industry and assist hire companies at all levels of their operations. He has ensured that Nesbit Law Group is now a member of MASS, an APIL accredited firm and an Associate Member of NACHO.

Alan has also been actively involved in ensuring that Claims Management Companies are given the correct advice to fit in with both their own regulations through the MOJ and the Solicitors Rules of Conduct which affect the referral of claims. Earlier in 2009, he set up ARC (Association of Regulated Claims Management Companies), which is a trade association representing small to medium sized claims management businesses, providing them with support and guidance and building clear paths of communication between the Regulator and ARC's members.

Dr Harry Brünjes- Premier Medical Group

Biography

Dr Harry Brünjes graduated from London University and Guy’s Hospital. He is Chairman of The Premier Medical Group and Non-Executive Director of Professional Medical Finance. Other appointments have included Chairman, PI Forum, BUPA and RTA Ltd. Harry is a Governor of the Expert Witness Institute and a former Chairman of AMRO.

Other roles include Chairman of Lancing College and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. In 2007 Harry was President of the Sussex Medical Society.

Harry enjoys sport, music and theatre. He has played piano professionally and is a regular writer, broadcaster and lecturer.

Joe Pendle - Insurance Services Office

Biography

Joe Pendle joined Insurance Services Office (ISO) in February 2004. He is responsible for ISO's Claims Services operation in the UK. Joe was formerly Group Operations Manager at the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB). At MIB he was responsible for bringing personal injury claims in-house and managing MIB's 120 claims handlers and 75,000 claims per annum. Joe was involved with the set up of the Motor Insurers' Information Centre (MIIC) and has a good knowledge of the Motor Insurance Database (MID). He has over 28 years of experience in general insurance claims since starting with the Federated Insurance Company in 1980. Joe has been responsible for handling personal injury claims for many of the companies that he has subsequently worked for. Joe was also instrumental in setting up MIB's anti-fraud strategy and Special Investigation Unit

Jonathan Dingle - 218 Strand

Biography

Jonathan Dingle is a barrister and mediator specialising in personal injury. He practices from 64 Bridge Street in Manchester and 218 Strand in London with an equal portfolio of Defendant and Claimant work. Called to the Bar in 1986 following a career at sea in the Royal Navy, he was the Fleet Air Arm’s barrister and later served in the Gulf War and as a Judge Advocate before entering private practice in 1996. He has built a reputation as a leading adviser, negotiator, and courtroom practitioner in complex and difficult bodily injury matters particularly involving motorcycle, aviation, and armed forces cases, and chronic pain, brain injury, and career loss matters. As a mediator, his work for more than a decade led to his appointment as Honorary Secretary of the Civil Mediation Council in 2003, a post which he still holds and in which he has played a major role in influencing judges, practitioners, and insurers as to the wisdom and economics of consensual outcomes in even seemingly intractable claims. Jim Buckley - Goldsmith Williams

Biography

Jim initially qualified as a psychologist and lectured in developmental and behavioural psychology to health and social service professionals for 6 years before moving into the heady world of commerce and legal services.

After managing a national franchise organisation Jim became involved in the launch of the National Homebuyers Group for lawyers with a fledgling Goldsmith Williams in 1986 and following private consultancy work joined Goldsmith Williams full time in1990.

Jim was a founder member of the Institute of Practice Managers in 1992 and is now the Business Development Director for the Goldsmith Williams Personal Injury department

Jim also set up and heads Amber Medico  - an MRO signatory medical agency based and operating from Goldsmith Williams for the last 10 years.
